Prior to the 17th century ‘Saracen’ was the name given to a Muslim, whether of Arab or Turkish origin. It originates from the Crusades, from a region called Sarakene in the northern Sinai peninsula. The name survives on pub signs across the country. There are many called ‘The Saracen’s Head’.
